CAMPUS CONNECTS NETWORK (CCN MEDIA) REPORT ON THE INTERVIEW WITH THE GUIDANCE AND COUNSELLING UNIT OF THE FEDERAL UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY AKURE
DATED; October 16, 2018.
INTERVIEWER: We are from Campus Connect Media. Can we meet you ma’am?
RESPONSE: My name is Dr. Mrs. Owele, B.A representing Head of the Unit, Dr. Arijesuyo, A.E.
INTERVIEWER; Can you enlighten us and tell us more about your Profession and Position?
RESPONSE: I am a Guidance Counselor at the Student Affairs Division. My Office is to be in charge of Female Halls of Residence on campus, Monitoring Porters and Students generally. We are responsible to the Dean of students in ensuring the general well-being of all students. We have six guidance counselors in the unit. Five at the students affairs while we have one at the continuing Center of education(CCE). Our services range in the following categories: Educational, Vocational and Social/personal area of students problems. At the unit, I make bold to say that we have qualified and trained guidance counselors that are there to attend to all students psychological crisis. In order to make sure that students, especially freshmen have a free workflow during school, the unit in collaboration with student affairs organizes orientation at the beginning of each academic session. This will help new students to adjust to school life, thereby ensuring their emotional support.
INTERVIEWER: How would you describe your experience as a guidance counselor in FUTA ?
RESPONSE: All conventional universities do have their guidance and counseling department under the faculty of education and they also have students who study it as a course, but FUTA is technologically oriented. The G&C unit is under the student affairs division. Here in FUTA, some students are not familiar with the G&C unit; but I want to use this medium to intimate students that they are free to come to the unit as the guidance counselor are trained and qualified. Students experiencing difficulties in one way or the other are enjoined to seek help immediately at the unit, particularly in the area of academics. This will prevent summary dismissal from the school. Among the many services, orientation of fresh students forms a critical program for all students to attend.
INTERVIEWER: What challenges do you face as a Guidance Counselor in FUTA?
RESPONSE: “Students disposition towards counselling within the university community is not impressive as most of them unconsciously fall into preventable crisis which encompasses academic, psychological and other emotional disorders. In addition, some cases would have been avoided before getting to the disciplinary committee if the affected students were aware of counselling services in the unit. Hence, guidance and counselling majorly centers on preventive measures”
INTERVIEWER: What are your plans to improve the capacity and operation of the Guidance and Counseling Unit of FUTA?
RESPONSE: Well, several steps have been taken and different suggestions have been made at the level of the unit to improve the capacity and operations of the G&C Unit. First, banners were made and pasted at the counselling bulletin boards around strategic places within the school to create awareness among the students about the unit. Second, efforts are ongoing to introduce Guidance summit tagged Counselling Open Day at the departmental levels for members of staff and the students. Third, programs are being put in place to enlighten students on various aspects, for example, you are aware of the CO-HABITATION AND SEXUAL ASSAULTS AMONG UNDERGRADUATES programme that was held a few weeks ago but sadly, the turnout of students was not so impressive though it was a maiden edition and we believe subsequent ones will be widely publicized and attended. Fourth, students are being implored to go through their HAND BOOKS being given to them at the beginning of each session by their various departments and the student affairs division, because it contains several rules and regulations and punishments for offences committed which will help reduce and prevent getting into trouble among students and help sustain their studentship within the school. Fifth, there could be the introduction of G&C as a course at the General studies department (GNS) so that counselor will be able to have physical contact with many students at a given time.”
INTERVIEWER: What will you say have been your Achievement so far as a Guidance Counselor of this Great Institution?
RESPONSE: My achievements as guidance counselor in Futa include :
>Students academic counselling
>Conflict resolution among students and members of staff as well
>Prevention of Crisis among students
>Screening students for the university Indigent scholarship program
>Conducting counselling sessions with married students
>Access to upgrading for contract staff (Porters)

RESPONSE: Campus Connect is really doing a GREAT JOB, and I’m really pleased. God bless you all, amen.
INTERVIEWER: As Guidance and Counselor, what advice and operating strategy will you give us to improve our services?
RESPONSE: the team should form a synergy with the unit to help broadcast the counselling services available to students in FUTA
INTERVIEWER: Finally ma, we will like you to charge our readers as we go into a new session.
RESPONSE: Students should take their academic work seriously and endeavor to watch out for the circle of friends they find themselves and keep. Students should also watch out for negative peer influences and set an academic goal for their respective degree or post-graduate studies. Students should not be distracted with so much social life that will affect their competencies in their primary goal in school
