These are the seven things you should avoid having in your resume.

In order to be considered for employment, job seekers often try to provide more than necessary information about themselves in their resumes.

Unfortunately, there are some things that should not appear on your resume and including them can cost you the job you really want.

You might believe that overloading your credential with so much information about yourself can guarantee you the job or make you more qualified than other applicants, but trust me, it could be a deal breaker and here are the reasons.

When going through a pile of resumes, employers and hiring managers are only looking out for a few candidates with the right information in their credentials and screen out the rest.

So, having wrong and irrelevant information in your credential is like helping them to give your resume no consideration.

Here are irrelevant things you should not have in your resume.

1. Anything that does not relate to the job

When you are updating your resume for a particular job, it is important you consider the requirements of the job and make your resume suitable for it.

Don’t include any information in your credential just because you want to show the hiring manager you have experience. If a bullet point in the resume does directly relate to the job requirements, please leave it out.

2. Grammatical errors

You can’t afford to riddle your credential with grammatical errors, no employer will take that from you. Your resume is an evidence of your writing skill and an error in it could turn off a hiring manager.

It is therefore important you check your resume again and again before you use it to apply for a job.

3. Personal social media account

Apart from your Linkedin profile, there is no reason why you should include your Facebook and Twitter account in your resume. No employer is interested in the numbers of followers you have on those social media platforms.

4. Irrelevant hobbies and interests

This is another mistake many job seekers make. Granted, your resume needs to say some things about you but don’t let it say anything the employer is not interested in. If you don’t have a hobby or interest that is relevant to the job requirement, don’t lie, just leave it out. But make sure you fill the skill section with your skills that are relevant to the job.

5. Exaggerated statements

No, no, don’t do this.  Don’t ever call yourself what you are not in your resume. Don’t even think a small exaggeration is allowed in your resume.  If the hiring managers do their own research, they might find you out.

6. Descriptions of duties without telling the value you added

While highlighting your previous job roles (if you have any) don’t just describe your duties, tell how you added value to the company. Hiring managers would prefer you tell them skills and tools you use to achieve results for your previous employer.

7. Broken links

It is also important you have a link in your resume. However, if you’re linking to your profile a website or an online resource, you must make sure the links work perfectly before you insert it in your resume.
