The Association for Research On Civil Society In Africa (AROCSA), in collaboration with the Ford Foundation, has established a PhD Fellowship Program in Africa.
As part of the program, selected PhD scholars who have successfully defended their research proposals for the study will be offered research grants to cover the cost of their research which includes fieldwork, data collection, data processing, and the printing of their results;
This research grant is targeted at encouraging the passing on of knowledge by African scholars in the fields of studies that are in line with AROCSA’s mission to develop a community blessed abundantly with excellence in research, and practice on civil society in the service of African development;
Successful applicants are to present papers on their research for review at AROCSA’s next annual conference which would hold in August 2021, where they will be inducted as AROCSA fellows;
Their completed theses would also be featured on the AROCSA website as an open-source document for various personnel to benefit from; Successful applicants would be awarded US$3,500.

ELIGIBILITY

AROCSA is accepting proposals from African scholars currently registered as full-time PhD students with any University in Africa. Applicants’ theses should focus on branches of concern for the program such as; nonprofit management, philanthropy, civil society, social entrepreneurship and voluntary action studies. Applicants should have already defended their research proposals at the time of application to be considered eligible for selection.

REQUIREMENTS

Applicants are to apply for the PhD Workshop on the AROCSA website. Applications should include:

1. Proof of registration with an African University.
2. Copy of Approved Research proposal: Applicants MUST provide copies of their defended research proposals and the focus of study MUST fall within any of the studies in line with AROSCA’s mission.
3. Letter of motivation from the applicant to convince the board to choose you.
4. Letter of support and consent from the applicant’s supervisor: Using the institution’s letterhead, the letter should contain the supervisor’s approval and confirmation that the student has indeed successfully defended their research proposal, and include an assurance of continued support for the applicant all through the duration of the research
The letter should also bear the supervisor’s contact details.
Budget: Applicants should present a detailed breakdown of finances required for the completion of their research, explaining how funds will be allocated and utilized from data collection to the completion of the thesis; With a clear indication of the link between expenses and the phases of their research.

Please endeavour to compile all items listed above into a single PDF document before submission. Documents for submission should be presented as double spaced, size 12 font with one-inch margins.

Please note that all items listed above are compulsory for acceptance and incomplete applications will not be considered.

Selection Criteria.
Grants are awarded based on merit. Applicants will be selected with a good view on:
1. Potential quality and impact of the proposed research.
2. Alignment with the thematic research areas of the program.

Submissions open: Friday, 11th September 2020
Applications deadline: Friday, 13th November 2020
Selection process ensues: Monday, 16th November 2020
AROCSA Fellows notification: Monday, 1st February 2020
