OVERVIEW
Senior Fellowships are offered annually to academics, established scholars or senior museum professionals within the field of British art and architectural history either to finish a manuscript or book for publication, or to undertake a sustained period of research towards a serious project.

They are designed to release Fellows from teaching and/or other employment responsibilities and supply them with an outlined period to devote to writing or research.

The Fellowship is a gift of £40,000 to make up for a period of nine months.

SCOPE
Nine-month full-time Senior Fellowships are specifically designed for:

• The completeness of a book or other such major study for immediate publication (printed or online)

• A period of sustained research for a clearly defined major project which can cause a publication (printed or online), a listing or an exhibition

FUNDING
Senior Fellowships are awards of £40,000, this will be taken as either:

• Replacement teaching or staff costs and paid on to either the Fellow’s University or Institution

• A lump-sum grant if the person is an independent or freelance scholar. The Centre doesn’t pay full economic costs.

If an independent Fellow accepts full-time employment during the period of the Senior Fellowship, the Centre will request a suitable reimbursement of the award.

ELIGIBILITY
• Our funding programme supports scholarship, academic research and therefore the dissemination of data within the fields of British art and architectural history, and of British visual culture understood more broadly, from the medieval period to this day.

• All supported topics must have a transparent art-historical perspective, including people who specialise in recent or contemporary artistic practice.

• All applications must demonstrate that British art, architecture or visual culture provides a considerable focus for his or her project.

• Applications are going to be assessed consistent with their academic rigour, originality, and contribution to scholarship.

• We don’t fund research projects that specialize in archaeology, current architecture practice, or the humanistic discipline.

• To apply for a Senior Fellowship, you must be an outstanding and established scholar within the field of British art or architectural history, ideally with a big publishing record.

• Senior Fellowships are for the academic year 2020/2021 and may be applied for between September 2020 and September 2021.

• Fellowships can’t be deferred to later academic years nor can they run concurrently with a Fellowship awarded by another institution.

• Applications for periods lesser than nine months will not be accepted.

APPLICATION
• Senior Fellowships are offered in our Spring round of funding, the next one will be Spring 2021 with applications opening on the 23rd of November, 2020.

• To register for a Senior Fellowship you can use our online system at grants.paul-mellon-centre.ac.uk. Once registered, you’ll be ready to fill out the web form (example of which may be downloaded below) and supply the small print of two referees. Once the appliance is submitted we’ll contact the nominated referees with details on how they submit their references which must be completed through our online system and must be no quite 500 words.

• The referees should have first-hand knowledge of the applicant’s academic career and therefore the discipline that funding is being sought. Advisory Council would really like to be told of the originality of the topic matter and therefore the applicant’s suitability to pursue such research.

• By 31st of January, applications and nominated referee details must be submitted. Referees have until 10th of February for the submission of their references.

REQUIREMENT
Within six months of completion of the Senior Fellowship the Fellow must submit a final report.
