Ocean Changemakers Challenge: The next wave of innovators

OVERVIEW.

The Ocean Changemakers Challenge launched by The Economist Group’s World Ocean Initiative aims to develop innovators (both male and female) with the potential to alleviate our world ocean challenges. It is targeted at early researchers or professionals. #OceanChangemakers

Three finalists will be honoured to present their idea for a “blue economy” during a special session at the World Ocean Summit Virtual Week in March 2021.
As a benefit, when tasked with bringing their ideas to life, they will be mentored by ocean leaders as part of a 12-month mentorship programme which begins shortly before the summit.
Mentors include:
– Angelique Braithwaite, director, wider Caribbean, Blue Finance.
– Kendra MacDonald, CEO, Canada’s Ocean Supercluster.

Entrant profile.
1. Researchers, early-career professionals, innovators with solutions to tackle some of the ocean’s greatest challenges, such as marine pollution, oil spillage, plastic waste accumulation and frequent deaths of marine creatures.
2. Individuals who have been recognized only by their local communities for their work and who have the zeal to make a change in the ocean situation and can pass on the zeal to mobilize others.
Entry format.
To enter the Ocean Changemakers challenge, applicants need to submit a short video of 1 minute in duration, which they will provide their answer to the question of how they are making contributions to the development and sustainability of the ocean economy and how well they can benefit from an ocean leader as a mentor.
The video should highlight how your work or academic study is creating solutions matched-up with our ocean challenges.

Selection criteria.
Applicants whose video matched our criteria will have their video posted on our website and uploaded on our social media channels with the hashtag #OceanChangemakers. Our criteria are;
Impact on blue economy.
Innovative.
Viable.
Scalable.
Investable.

Winning entries.

Only three applicants will be chosen, and a dedicated session Mentoring from a high-profile ocean mentor, who will work with them for 12-months to help groom them.
