OVERVIEW:
United Nations Information Service’s Graduate Study Programme (GSP) is currently the longest-running educational programme under the United Nations, presently in its 59th year. Over the years the Graduate Study Program has trained and mentored thousands of youth from over 100 countries. The seminar gives an avenue for participants to improve their understanding of the United Nations System and the International Geneva through first-hand observations, lectures, research, group work, and visits to Geneva-based institutions.

59TH GRADUATE STUDY PROGRAMME:

Under the theme: “Post-COVID World: Reset, Resilience, Recovery”. The 59th Graduate Study Programme will be held at the Palais des Nations in Geneva, Switzerland commencing on Monday, 28th of June and closing Friday, 9 July 2021. The program will include lectures which would be presented by representatives of the United Nations and other Geneva-based organizations, it would also comprise visits to various institutions, and daily tasks for participants in working groups under the guidance and supervision of expert moderators.

NB:  While the organizers expect that the current pandemic situation will improve by summer 2021 in order for the 59th GSP take place physically in Geneva, final decision on this issue will be made in the spring. Applicants should however bear in mind that, relying on the conditions on ground, the programme might need to take place virtually. All updates on the decision taken will be published on this page.

Age and Language Requirements:
Fluency in English is essential.
Various sessions and discussions may be held in French, therefore participant must have a working knowledge of French.
Applicant’s age must be betwee 22 and 32 years of age as at the time of application.
Applicants must be currently be enrolled in a master’s degree programme or a postgraduate degree programme as at the time of application.
Former participants in previous editions of the Graduate Study Programme will not be able to apply again.

How to apply:

Students who are interested in participating in the 2021 Graduate Study Programme must submit their applications online. Deadline for submission is: *Friday, 5th of March 2021*. No applications will be accepted after this date.

The application form is to be completed on our website, and should be accompanied by a copy of the applicant’s passport, a letter of recommendation (in either English or French) given by a university or a governmental authority, proof of current enrolment (at the time of application) in a master’s degree programme or a postgraduate degree programme, as well as the university diplomas obtained.

NOTICE: incomplete applications will not be taken into consideration.

Once accepted, successful candidates will be informed ahead of time to provide a medical certificate which attests their good health and also a proof of medical insurance coverage in Switzerland covering the duration of the GSP. These two documents will be accepted in either English or French only.
There won’t be consideration for applications by candidates who are employed full time.

Participation in this programme is free of charge. The United Nations does not make any monetary contributions towards visa, travel, board and lodging costs of the accepted participants. Governments, Universities or Foundations may give grants to selected candidates. Candidates can seek more information and advice on this from their universities.

PARTICIPANT SELECTION PROCESS:
Successful participants for the Graduate Study Programme are chosen by a Selection Committee which is composed of officials of the United Nations Office at Geneva from various backgrounds and and possessing various professional experiences.

The following criterias will guide the selection process:
• Academic background
• Extracurricular activities
• Geographical balance
• Gender balance
•Working knowledge of the two working languages of the Programme (English and French)
• Usefulness of the Programme in the career path of the applicant

Applications are considered on a case-by-case basis. The motivation of the choices made by the Selection committee is not to be disclosed. Decisions made by the Selection Commitee will be deemed  final and therefore cannot be appealed.
Candidates will receive emails notifying them of the Selection Committee’s decision by Monday, 19 April 2021.
